Vihara is Sanskrit for (Buddhist) monastery. It
originally meant "dwelling" or "refuge", such as
those used by wandering monks during the rainy
season. With time, the name came to stay and today
Buddhist Monasteries the world over use this suffix
to mean a Buddhist Institution. Some Viharas became
extremely important institutions, some of them
evolving into major Buddhist Universities with
thousands of students, such as Nalanda. The State of
Bihar in India as well derives its name from Vihara
since it is also home to important Buddhist places.
